Layover site and passenger wellbeing location

What is a layover site and passenger wellbeing location?

A layover site and passenger wellbeing location is a suitable area made available for tourist traffic heading across the channel to use as an alternative to remaining on the road during extreme periods of congestion. Sites will only be used in the event of major disruption to support fluidity and will provide a safe off-road area tourist traffic may temporarily use. They will become operational when situation demands and only when absolutely necessary.

Where is the site?

Currently there is one contingency site for tourist traffic which is at Lydden Hill Race Circuit. In the event the site is stood up, tourist passengers who feel the need to take time out from the queue on the road, may use the site for a break by following these instructions:

  • Exit the queue of traffic, only if it is safe to do so;

  • Follow diversion signs for “Layover site” to Lydden Hill Race Circuit, Wootton, Canterbury, Kent.

  • Follow the directions and safety instructions from the marshals as you enter the site.

  • Either when you are ready, or instructed by site marshals, safely leave the site and continue your journey.

What facilities are available at a layover site and passenger wellbeing location?

When activated as a contingency site, Lydden Hill Race Circuit will have basic facilities available, including:

  • A safe parking area

  • A safe exercise area for pets

  • Drinking water for pets

  • Male, female and disabled toilets

  • Concessions for people to purchase food and drink

  • *In the event of extreme heat and hot weather water will be provided free of charge by site marshals

What other precautions should I take?

  • Check your route before setting off

  • Make sure you pack your car with everything you might need if you meet delays

  • Water

  • Medication

  • Snacks

  • Anything else that could make your journey as comfortable as possible

  • Check your vehicle before you set off. Most breakdowns are avoidable and checking your tyres, lights, fuel, oil and water can help you have a safer journey.
